While this article may seem remedial to many of you, we are writing it to help those of you who may not understand how marketing online works.
 
Just because you've created a website for your business does not mean that it will be found when people use search engines to look for you, or your type of services.  
 
For photo booth owners, this is especially true.  It's not like the old days of the Yellow Pages, where all companies were listed in alphabetical order and therefore were easy to find.  Instead, you have thousands of companies that are competing for the same key words that you are.  
 
You will need to market your website, which means understanding SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and digital marketing.
 
Think about all the companies that would like the words "photo booth" to result in a hit for their website.
 
You have manufacturers who fabricate and make the machines, suppliers who sell parts and pieces and ink and paper and printers, and all the other photo booth rental companies as well.  They are all paying for search engines to show their website on the first page when someone Googles "photo booth".

FAQ: Why doesn't my website show up in Google when I'm searching for it?

We get asked this question all the time, and it's a good one because there are many possible reasons that may attribute to this happening to your website. First, let's clarify the different scenarios that may have brought you to ask this question in the first place.
   

Scenarios:
  1. You're searching for your website, it's been online for well over a couple of months but you can't find it when you search using keywords that you think your clients may be using.
  2. Your website was just launched and you're eager to find it online by searching for it - you even search for your specific company name but it's still not coming up.
  3. You can find your website when searching for it using very specific keywords, however you'd like to have your website ranked higher using a broader range of keywords.
  4. You've signed up for a Google AdWords Campaign because we've recommended giving it a try or someone you know told you about it. Once the campaign is started you try searching for your site and you don't see it coming up under the "Sponsored Links" on the right hand side.
Now that we've outlined the most common scenarios when this question usually occurs we'll explain the possible causes and solutions for them.



Scenario 1: This is extremely common for anyone starting up and launching a new website. Essentially the cause of this is due to Google's secret algorithms, meaning their secret set of rules that determines what results are displayed for each specific search. With that said, Google ranks website listings using a number of different proven criteria. 

Here's some of the most known ones: 
  • Link Popularity 
    • (how many other websites are linking to yours and how popular are they) 
  • Age of your website 
    • (how long has it been online, older ones get better results) 
  • Relatable Keywords 
    • (does the text within your website match search terms someone typed) 
  • Regular Updates 
    • (how often is it updated - regularly updated sites generally rank better)
If you can improve on any of the following, you should see better results overall - but not instantly. Working to improve the above items takes time, and it usually takes Google a considerable amount of time to reflect the new, improved rankings (weeks). All in all, we always recommend being patient and keeping logs to see the gradual improvement over time.

Scenario 2: You will notice your website is usually not found right after launching it and searching for it online. This is completely normal and usually takes anywhere from 2 weeks or longer to be listed in the major search engines (ie. Google). This is because they each manage billions or even trillions of websites all over the world and it takes them time to update their listings. One way to ensure Google is aware of your new website is by submitting it to be crawled, by going here: http://www.google.com/addurl/. We'll normally do this automatically for all of our clients, however if you don't see your site coming up within a few weeks, it wouldn't hurt to add it again. 

Scenario 3: This is very similar to the first scenario, however you may have already spent a lot of effort trying improve the search criteria Google looks for. In these situations we can also lend a hand and spend some time doing additional Search Engine Optimization. We also often recommend giving the Google AdWords program a try. Basically what this does is it allows you to pick and choose what keywords you'd like your website to come up for when people are searching for it. Your website will show up in the "Sponsored Links" area on the right side of the results and you don't pay anything unless someone actually clicks on the advertisement and goes to your website. Scenario 4: If you've already decided to go ahead with a Google AdWords campaign and you're continuously trying it out by searching for your website, you'll usually notice you don't see it come up all the time, or you can't get it to come up at all. This is very normal due to how Google's AdWords Campaign works. Since there are other businesses bidding for the same top spot (or any spot for that matter), they have to distribute your website with many others throughout the day so your site doesn't show up all of the time (which is fine because you only pay if someone clicks on the sponsored link). The only sure way to see how your ad is performing is by logging into your Google Adwords account and checking out the detailed stats.
